Did you know you can create a colourful, sculptural animal using just hay wrapped with wool? The simplicity of hand building with hay requires no tools and great results can be achieved with just a sense of fun and imagination.
In this workshop you will be guided in;
- Creating a base form with hay appropriate to your chosen animal
- Dividing the hay into the main features
- Techniques in wrapping with wool
- Finishing the details of your animal
This method of making a ‘bush toy’ is an indigenous art form which is championed by the Tjanpi Weavers of the Central desert. Our tutor, artist Caroline Hawkins, learnt this artform from Gunditjmara master weaver Bronwyn Razem, who has given her permission to teach and share the knowledge of making bush animals.
All materials supplied and this workshop suitable for adults. Please note that the hay can be dusty, so this activity is not suitable for those with existing respiratory conditions.
